How to Measure Roman Shades

Accurate measurements are the key to ensuring a perfect fit, smooth installation, and optimal light control. Please follow the instructions below according to your preferred mounting style: Inside Mount or Outside Mount.

1. Inside Mount

Overview: The shade is installed inside the window frame for a sleek, built-in look.

How to Measure

1)Width (Order Width)

    • Measure the inside width of the window frame at the top, middle, and bottom.
    • Record the narrowest measurement as your final order width.
    • The factory will automatically deduct 3/8 inch to allow proper clearance.

2)Height (Order Height)

    • Measure the inside height of the frame at the left, center, and right.
    • Record the tallest measurement as your final order height.

Important Notes

The window frame depth must be at least 2 inches to fully accommodate the headrail.

Pro Tips

  • Width: Use the narrowest measurement to prevent the shade from binding.
  • Height: Use the tallest measurement to ensure complete coverage and reduce light gaps.

2. Outside Mount

Overview: The shade is mounted outside the frame, covering the entire window. This provides superior light control and makes the window appear taller.

How to Measure

1)Width (Order Width)

    • Measure the total width of the area you want to cover.
    • Add 2–3 inches on each side (a total of 4–6 inches) to minimize light gaps.
    • The result will be your Outside Headrail Width.

2)Height (Order Height)

    • Measure from the top of the installation area to the bottom of the desired coverage.
    • Add 4–6 inches above the window frame to allow space for the headrail and improve light control.

Pro Tips

  • Adding extra width improves side coverage and blocks more light.
  • Adding extra height makes the window appear taller and enhances light control.

3. Window Type Recommendations

  • Sliding windows (side-opening): Suitable for both inside and outside mounts.
  • Outward-opening windows: Suitable for both inside and outside mounts.
  • Inward-opening windows: Suitable only for outside mounts, as inside mounts may block window operation.

Summary

  • Inside Mount: Clean, built-in appearance, recommended when the window frame depth is sufficient.
  • Outside Mount: Better light control and a taller window appearance.

Choosing the right mounting style ensures both beauty and functionality for your Roman shades.
