Measure Drapery

I. Tools You’ll Need

Essential: Steel tape measure (fabric tapes can be inaccurate)

II. How to Determine Drapery Width

Formula:

Total curtain width = fullness ratio × rod width

Step 1: Choose the Right Fullness Ratio

The fullness ratio determines how rich and elegant your curtains will look. A higher ratio means a more luxurious drape.

How_to_Choose_the_Right_Fullness_Ratio

Fullness Ratio Look Best For
Sleek and minimal Small windows, minimalist spaces
1.5× Standard fullness, balanced Living rooms, bedrooms
Rich, layered folds Formal settings, luxury interiors
2.5× Dramatic and opulent Hotels, large windows, grand spaces

Our Recommendations

  • Blackout fabrics: Use 2× or higher for better structure and opacity.
  • Sheers: Use 1.5× to 2× for a light and airy look.
  • High-end interiors: Choose 2.5× to 3× for a luxurious statement.

Step 2: Determine Curtain Rod Width

Case 1: Rod Already Installed

Rod width = actual rod width

Case 2: Rod Not Installed Yet

Formula:
Rod width = window frame width + (extension × 2)

How_to_Determine_Curtain_Rod_Width

Recommended Extension

Extend 6–15 inches beyond each side of the window frame. This ensures proper light control and allows the curtains to stack neatly when opened.

Tip:

For smaller windows, closer to 6 inches may look more proportionate, while larger windows can handle a wider extension.

Example

Window frame width: 36"
Extension: 6" on each side
Rod width = 36 + (6 × 2) = 48"

Step 3: Calculate Curtain Width

Formula:

Total curtain width = rod width × fullness ratio

How_to_Calculate_Curtain_Width

Example

Rod width: 48"
Fullness ratio:
Total curtain width = 48 × 2 = 96"

Tip:

If you are making two panels, divide the total width by two. In this example, each panel would be 48".

III. How to Measure Curtain Length

Formula:

Curtain Length = Rod-to-Floor Height + Hem Adjustment

Step 1: Position the Rod

Install the curtain rod 6–10 inches above the window frame, or closer to the ceiling for added height.

Step 2: Take the Measurement

Measure straight down from the top of the rod or track to the floor.

Step 3: Choose Your Finish Style

Style Length Difference Look Best For
½" above the floor (Floating) -½" Clean and practical Kitchens, kids’ rooms, bathrooms
“Kiss” the floor 0" Crisp and modern Most contemporary interiors
Puddling +2" to +4" Luxurious and dramatic Formal living rooms, bedrooms

Tip: Extending beyond +4" can make everyday use and cleaning more difficult.

Example

Rod to floor distance: 80"
Style: Floating (-½")
Final curtain length = 80 - ½ = 79½"
